Bionic Woman

May 18, 2012 –  A woman who was paralyzed from the chest down in a horseback riding accident in 2007 completed the London Marathon with the help of a $75,000 bionic suit.

Claire Lomas started the race along with 35 thousand other people on April 22 and crossed the finish line 16 days later. The marathon is 42 kilometres (26.2 miles) long. She walked roughly 3.2 kilometres (2 miles) per day with the aid of the bionic suit and her family by her side.

She did not receive an official medal for completing the marathon and will not appear on the official placing list because she did not complete the marathon in the same day, as rules state. Many other marathon runners and supporters are outraged at this, and fourteen fellow marathoners have given their medals to Lomas to support her.
