June 21, 2013 – Six squirrels that accidentally got their tails stuck and fused together have been separated and are now able to live happy independent lives in the woods of Regina, Saskatchewan.
A woman spotted the squirrels and captured them to take them to a veterinarians, knowing that they would soon die from not being able to hunt well or would pull their tails off trying to separate themselves!
It sounds like something that happens once in a lifetime, but it is actually more common than you'd think. There's actually a name for this phenomenon: it's called a "squirrel king." "It's a pretty rare thing to see, but I have seen it happen once before,: said Dr. Steven Kruzeniski.
Veterinarians at the Animal Clinic of Regina found that their tails became fused by tree sap that likely dripped onto them when they were all sleeping close to one another. They managed to separate all of their tails without having to amputate any, which is sometimes necessary in "squirrel kings."
The six squirrels won't have their fluffy tails back for awhile, but they're probably just happy that they aren't going nutty attached to one another anymore!
